Hydrous, silica-rich melts in the sub-arc mantle and their relationship with erupted arc lavas

Summary:Representative analyses are presented of glass inclusions in hydrous xenoliths from Batan Island (Luzon arc, Philippines), which are mainly spinel-bearing harzburgites with olivine, orthopyroxene and characterized by LILE enrichment and negative anomalies in HFSE. Sr, Nd and O isotopic ratios of the xenoliths are similar to those of the host lavas. The hydrous SiO2-rich glass inclusion melts have altered their host peridotites yielding a metasomatized mantle. This 'fertilized' mantle is the source region of arc magmas which share continuous chemical trends with the melt inclusions indicating mixing/melting in varying degrees. The data indicate the importance of slab-mantle interactions in island arc magma genesis. [R.K.H.]
