Geochemical and isotope composition of pebbles from the Caban Conglomerate Formation and their bearing on the source of Welsh Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks

Summary:Major, trace and REE geochemistry, together with Nd isotope determinations, provide insights into the provenance of seven pebbles (including granite, granophyre, diorite, basaltic andesite, dacite and tuff) from this Silurian formation in the Welsh Basin. The compositions of the pebbles support their origin by magmatism in a subduction-related environment on an active continental margin. Biotite whole-rock Rb-Sr systematics constrain the age of one granite pebble to 650 +- 38 m.y. The pebbles are the means by which the Nd signature of Proterozoic (Avalonian) basement was introduced into the sedimentary pile. [C.H.D.]
