Summary:Polish clay raw materials were studied as a potential source of Al for aluminium chloride production. Preliminary treatment of kaolin to obtain the best results in the process of chlorination was determined. The composition of products of kaolinite thermal decomposition plays a major role in this process. Of these products, a spinel transition phase is chemically most active. It presumably consists of defect Al,Si-spinel and small amounts of Al2O3. [J.J.]
