An extended episode of early Mesoproterozoic metamorphic fluid flow in the Reynolds Range, central Australia

Summary:High-T early Mesoproterozoic fluid infiltration associated with low-P-high-T metamorphism of the Reynolds Range has been studied. By measuring the Pb-U-Th ages of monazite and zircon from the distinctive pegmatite and aluminous segregations in relict fluid-flow zones and from nearby country rocks it has been possible not only to distinguish between the newly formed and pre-existing mineral grains or parts of grains, but also to detect a measurable time interval between the peak of metamorphism and the waning of fluid flow, thereby assessing the total duration of a metamorphic event. The last regional high-grade metamorphism in the area occurred at ∼ 1600 m.y., not ∼ 1780 m.y. as previously thought. The ∼ 1780 m.y. separate event affected only the basement of the Reynolds range group. [R.E.S.]
