The boron isotope geochemistry of the Kirka borate deposit, western Turkey

Summary:Boron isotope and 87Sr/86Sr analyses are presented of samples of colemanite, ullexite and borax from this deposit, in Western Anatolia, which formed during the Neogene by evaporation of playa lakes fed by geothermal springs. Δ11B ranges from -14.90/00 in colemanite to -1.60/00 in borax. The lack of correlation between the B and Sr isotope ratios for the three minerals suggests that varying sources of B were not significant in defining the variations in B isotope compositions. The size in differences in Δ11B between the minerals is too large for them to have co-precipitated from brines with the same B isotope composition and pH, and indicate that colemanite precipitated from a brine with lower pH than ulexite and the latter with pH lower than that for borax. The results are compatible with the B isotope systematics for modern geothermal systems. [R.K.H.]
