Summary:Major and trace element chemistry (Li, B, Sc, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Ba, La, Ce) of the clay portions (< 2 mu m) of 64 selected samples of the Oligomiocene pelites collected from the Antognola and Ranzano formation in this area are presented. The analyses were performed by XRF, AAS, optical spectrography, gas volumetry and TG; the quartz content was estimated by XRD. The bulk chemistry is consistent with the clay mineralogy distribution in the samples. Illite and smectite, and B, Rb and K2O are found to be the most useful in characterizing the Ranzano and Antognola formations and in distinguishing three different areas in the latter. The illite/smectite ratio in the Ranzano formation is approx 2.6, much higher than the mean value of 1.0 of the Antognola formation. The high illite value in the Ranzano formation is linked both to the high contents of B, K2O, Rb and to the diagenetic degree. The B and K2O recalculated on 100% illite in the two main formations are related to their different diagenetic history. Many geochemical features of the Antognola formation pelites confirm the hypothesis of a volcanic intrabasin activity influx and enables the pelites of three different areas to be distinguished. The correlation of smectite with B, V, Zn, Ga, Zr, and Nb in Antognola suggests a flocculation phenomenon with adsorption of B and trapping of small particles of heavy accessory minerals. The depositional environment would contain a major low- energy fluviatile contribution. Samples from the Zocca area have different geochemical characteristics, probably also linked to fluviatile contributions. [R.E.S.]
