Isotopic ages of the Penglai Group in the Jiaobei Belt and their geotectonic implications

Summary:The Penglai group of metasediments is the only remaining cover of the Archaean to early Proterozoic crystalline basement in E Shandong. Whole-rock Rb-Sr, illite-whole-rock Rb-Sr and illite K-Ar ages are reported and interpreted. On the basis of structural and metamorphic studies coupled with analyses of illite crystallinity, a whole-rock age of 473 ± 32 m.y. (Ordovician) is interpreted as the time of the end of burial metamorphism experienced by the group, i.e. the Penglai group is pre-Ordovician. The first-phase folding and syntectonic low greenschist-facies metamorphism took place before 299 ± 4 m.y., i.e. in the late Carboniferous. The Penglai movement that occurred in the Jiaobei Belt on the S margin of the North China plate is attributed to collision between the North China and Yangtze plates along the Jiaonan collision belt.
