Bavenite, Ca4Be3Al[Si9O25(OH)3], from the Ilimaussaq alkaline complex, South Greenland

Summary:The first find of bavenite from Greenland is reported, bringing the total of Be minerals from Ilimaussaq to 16; it is found in a well defined, marginal zone of pneumatolytic alteration on the N coast of the Kangerdluarssuk Fjord, and is associated with albite, ilvaite, aegirine, ferrian epidote, andradite, calcite, etc. The bavenite crystals are platy on (100) and have α = β 1.5845, Γ 1.5957, 2V<F128MV>g<F255D> 18°; orientation α = b, β = a, Γ = c; a 23.212, b 4.993 c 19.480 Å; the IR spectrum is presented. EPMA and CHN analyses gave SiO2 58.55, Al2O3 5.60, CaO 24.25, BeO 9.5, H2O 1.8, = 99.7; this bavenite is thus the most Be-rich and Al-poor so far reported. EPMA results are given also for the associated minerals listed above, and also for allanite, arfvedsonite, hastingsite, grossular and a ferroan chamosite. [R.A.H.]
