Summary:The extent of substitution of Fe by Al in goethites from 32 lake ore samples from 11 Finnish lakes varied between 0 and 23 mole.%. A negative relationship is indicated between Al substitution and the particle size of the ore. Differences between sites also reflected the kinetic and environmental influences on this substitution. Non-substituted goethite is formed in coarse-grained sediments with local high concentrations of Fe due to iron-rich springs. Unit cell-edge lengths vary as a function of Al substitution, but deviate from the Vegard relationship towards higher values. [R.A.H.]
