Ion microprobe analysis of 18O/16O in authigenic and detrital quartz in the St. Peter Sandstone, Michigan Basin and Wisconsin Arch, USA; contrasting diagenetic histories

Summary:A new ion microprobe technique in the analysis of high energy secondary 18O- and 16O- ions in authigenic quartz cements, using extreme energy filtering, is applied to O isotopic variations in authigenic and detrital quartz from the Ordovician St Peter Sandstone, Michigan Basin and Wisconsin Arch. Overgrowths are uniformly higher in Δ18O than in detrital grains and gradients of up to 25% exist across a few µm. 18O-enriched quartz overgrowths from the Wisconsin Arch show complex CL zonation indicating low-T quartz precipitation during mixing of meteoric with upwelling basinal fluids, or higher-T quartz precipitatioin during episodic gravity-driven upwelling of warm basinal fluids (of similar O isotopic composition to Michigan Basin fluids) from the Illinois Basin and related to MVT Pb-Zn ore-forming fluids. Porosity elimination and restriction of fluid flow occurred progressively in the St Peter Sandstone in the Michigan Basin during cementation. [R.K.H.]
