Summary:An extensive study of this area has been undertaken to identify pre-Alpine protoliths and to reconstruct its lithologic and tectonic setting. Three main complexes have been defined: 1) the polymetamorphic basement complex; 2) the monometamorphic cover complex, subdivided into two units, and 3) the pre-Alpine high-T basement complex. A schematic evolution for the zone is proposed; based on available and new data it is shown that the internal and external parts of the polymetamorphic basement experienced different cooling histories.
