Summary:It is popular, especially in studies using sub-surface data, to relate the localization of deformation within cover sequences to the reactivation of basement faults beneath. This paper provides an example (from the French Alps, W of Grenoble) of how the converse is true, namely that deformation mechanisms within the cover, and the differing rheologies of basement and cover rocks, can control basement reactivation.
