Summary:The main building stones used in the construction of the ancient cathedral (Seu Vella) of Lerida (Catalonia, Spain), a sandstone ('Lerida stone') and a dolomite ('Vinaixa stone') are studied. The mineralogical composition and pore system are analysed, as well as some physical properties directly linked to the fluid movement and stone deterioration (water absorption, by immersion and capillary section, and water vapour permeability). It is also verified that the feldspar/kaolinite ratio in sandstone samples of the monument, from blocks placed with the same orientation, decreases with the age of its use. [F.V.]
