Summary:A detailed analysis of the state of preservation and the nature of the building material is reported for the Roman tower (donjon) of the city of Loches, France, built during the XI century. The stone of the main front of the tower is a silicified bioclastic calcimicrite referable to the middle Turonian Chalk; spherules of opal-CT are contained in macropores. This material has a high porosity (> 40%), leading to weak mechanical strength. [R.A.H.]
