The boron isotope geochemistry of the Neogene borate deposits of western Turkey

Summary:Boron and strontium isotopic compositions are presented of 80 borate minerals, including major borax, colemanite and ulexite and minor veatchite-A, tunellite, kernite, terrugite, probertite, meyerhofferite, inderite, inyoite, hydroboracite, howlite and pandermite, from the main deposits - Kirka, Bigadic, Emet, and smaller deposits - Kestelek and Sultancayir. Δ11B ranges -1.60/00 to -25.30/00, the values of the main minerals being largely controlled by the mineralogy and the pH of the precipitating brines. Δ11B of the minor borate minerals discriminate between those of primary precipitates and those formed through alteration of preexisting borates with loss of B. The inverse relation between average Δ11B and 87Sr/86Sr in colemanite indicates variation in sources of B and Sr. [R.K.H.]
