Summary:Despite the high reliability and often precise ages obtained by U-Pb isotope analyses, there is no generally accepted way for assigning a best age and age-error or for evaluating assertions of concordance. The approaches presented for extracting best estimate ages from concordant data sets obviate arbitrary decisions on which U/Pb isotopic ratio gives the best age, use all relevant isotope ratio data (provided these are concordant) and provide a quantitative metric to evaluate concordance and age equivalence. The total Pb/U isochron recovers the complete set of uranogenic Pb isotope ratios, errors, and error correlations in a single regression. [R.K.H.]
