Crustal contamination of Kilauea Volcano magmas revealed by oxygen isotope analyses of glass and olivine from Puu Oo eruption lavas

Summary:OIB have a large range in δ 18O (4.5-7.50/00) compared to assumed primordial mantle values (5.5-6.00/00) and with MORB (5.7 ± 0.20/00). Some Hawaiian tholeiites have low δ 18O (4.6-5.20/00) which could be a primary source feature or the result of crustal contamination. The current 14 year old Puu Oo eruption from Kilauea has significant temporal variation in 86Sr/87Sr, 206Pb/204Pb and 18O in the glassy matrix and in 18O in olivines which probably reflect contamination with metamorphosed Kilauea rocks during the magma's 19 km transit through the volcano's east rift zone. Major element, O, Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic analyses of the Puu Oo tholeiites are listed. [B.E.L.]
