Correlated helium and lead isotope variations in Hawaiian lavas

Summary:Analytical data (206Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/204Pb and 3He/4He) are compiled for Hawaiian lavas from Loihi, Mauna Loa, surface and submarine samples, Koolau and Haleakala. The results show good correlations between the high 3He/4He ratios in Hawaiian shield-building and pre-shield lavas with their Pb isotope ratios. These correlations show that high 3He/4He ratios in these lavas are carried by a distinctive mantle source. A three-component model of the sources of pre-shield and shield-building lavas can account simultaneously for their He and Pb isotope systematics. [R.K.H.]
