Geochemistry of granitic rocks and their minerals from the Kavala Pluton, northern Greece

Summary:This pluton consists of metaluminous Alpine I-type granitic rocks. A medium- to coarse-grained porphyritic gneissic granodiorite predominates over a coarse-grained granodiorite, though they can be distinguished neither mineralogically nor geochemically. Subordinate diorite, tonalite and monzogranite also occur. The granodiorites contain numerous enclaves of dioritic and tonalitic compositions. Most of the whole-rock major and trace element variation diagrams indicate fractionation trends from diorite to monzogranite, but the enclaves fall outside these. However, the variation diagrams of Nb of rocks, Zr, Ce, La, Nb, Rb, Rb/K, Ni/Mg of amphiboles, Mn of allanite, and Ca and Mn of epidote vs 1/3Si + K - (Ca + Mg) in the granitic rocks define a tonalite, granodiorite and monzogranite sequence, showing that diorite and enclaves plot outside the trends. Least squares analysis of major elements and modelling of trace elements indicate that granodiorite and monzogranite were probably derived from a tonalite magma by fractional crystallization of plagioclase, amphibole, biotite and quartz. The relatively high Δ18O values and the positive correlation between SiO2 and initial 87Sr/86Sr suggest that this mechanism was accompanied by crustal contamination. The minerals of these granitic rocks re-equilbrated during deformation contemporaneously with emplacement and during cooling, but the enclaves had already solidified. [R.E.S.]
