Summary:This area 12-45 km W of Aberdeen lies within the Caledonian orogenic belt and is underlain by metamorphic and igneous rocks in roughly equal proportions. The Dalradian metasedimentary rocks were deposited as sands, silts and muds on the margin of the spreading Iapetus Ocean in the late Precambrian (650-600 m.y.); dolerite sheets were intruded into the sediments soon after deposition. These Dalradian rocks underwent polyphase deformation and high-T metamorphism during the Caledonian orogeny, resulting in large-scale nappe structures accompanied by greenschist-facies metamorphism. In the early Ordovician, a second deformational episode was followed by the intrusion of large volumes of basic magma, including the layered intrusions of Insch and Boganclough; the climax of regional metamorphism was roughly contemporaneous with these intrusions and produced andalusite-cordierite schists. A third episode of regional deformation occurred almost immediately after these events, while the rocks remained at high T and, still in the early Ordovician, a fourth deformation caused retrogressive metamorphism; a suite of granites to diorites was then intruded. In the Silurian and early Devonian (∼ 425-398 m.y.) many post-orogenic granitic plutons with accompanying pegmatite and microgranite sheets and dykes were intruded (Crathes and Cairngorm suites). Deposition of the arenaceous Lower Devonian Rhynie group was accompanied by faulting and minor andesitic volcanism, and by hot spring activity near Rhynie. Petrographical details are included for all formations and some geochemical data are plotted. [R.A.H.]
