Palynostratigraphy of the lower Tertiary volcanics and marine clastic sediments in the southern part of the West Greenland basin; implications for the timing and duration of the volcanism

Summary:Hyaloclastites and subaqueous lava flows are intercalated with clastic sediments bearing dinoflagellates in the early Tertiary West Greenland Basin. Three stages of infilling are recognized; marine in the first stage and non-marine in the second. In the third stage the basin was displaced towards the S and was marginally marine. The total known range of the volcanic rocks falls within the NP3 to NP8 interval, giving a minimum duration for the main plateau-building stage of volcanism of 4-6 m.y. The basalts are reversely magnetized with one normally magnetized sequence which is stratigraphically correlated with NP4, and thereby identified as anomaly 27. The basalts in East Greenland started erupting during the NP9 zone, so that the East Greenland volcanic activity largely succeeded that in West Greenland. This means that volcanic activity started in the peripheral part of the presumed mantle plume and only later switched to the central part. [W.S.W.]
