Summary:The technique presented by Yoshinobu & Girty for measuring volume change has obvious applicability to the space problem associated with pluton emplacement. Since their numerical estimates will probably be widely referenced, attention must be drawn to errors in the quoted confidence limits, whose use would suggest their estimates are more precise than is the case. In their study of the contact aureole of the Emigrant Gap composite pluton (Sierra Nevada, California), they reported the % change in total rock mass between chlorite-grade rocks subjected to, and unaffected by, the thermal influence of the pluton and aureole as -11.1 ± 1.4 %, on the assumption that Al is an immobile reference frame element. Calculations presented here suggest the standard error of the mean is 3.6 %, and thus the 95 % confidence limits are closer to ± 7 %. [J.F.]
