Summary:Ash flows may pass entirely over very small ridges, but may partially be blocked by intermediate-sized ridges, with a fraction reflected upstream as a travelling bore and with the fraction that passes over becoming hydraulically controlled at the ridge crest. If the ridges are high enough flows are totally blocked. The minimum ridge height that leads to total blocking has a complex variation with distance from source. This and other variables are examined by laboratory experiments and theoretical modelling. These indicate that a flow with mass fluxes > 108-109 kg/s can partially scale barriers as high as 1000 m at distances of tens of kilometres from source. [E.H.F.]
