Summary:Hydrothermal fluid evolution north of the Permian St Austell granite was studied by EPMA for zoned tourmalines from a < 2 cm fault breccia within massive quartz-tourmaline rocks. Four chemically distinct overgrowth zones were caused by episodic mixing between Mg-, Al-rich magmatic hydrothermal fluids, dominant in the inner zone, with increasingly more oxidizing, Fe-rich formation waters, giving high Sn contents (< 0.35 wt.%) with Sn present as Sn4+, not the more usual Sn2+. Overgrowths and tourmaline nucleation is also studied. Major element analyses of 18 points of tourmaline are listed. [B.E.L.]
