Geochemical studies of gold-silver-tellurium mineralization in the vicinity of Sacaramb, southern Apuseni Mountains, Romania; some preliminary results

Summary:The Au, Ag, Te deposits of this region occur in veins in Neogene hornblende andesite stocks and lava flows, which are heavily altered near the mineralized veins. Analyses are presented of the andesites and ore alteration assemblage for major, minor and trace elements, which are also figured in a chondrite-normalized incompatible element spidergram. Strontium isotopes of the fresh and hydrothermally altered andesites are discussed; an approximate age of 8 m.y. for the andesites and mineralization is derived from stratigraphic information. The veins show the following paragenesis: early pyrite > sphalerite + galena > sulphosalts and Au/Ag tellurides > rhodochrosite + calcite. From stable isotope data, quartz and calcite are not in isotopic equilibrium and were deposited at different T or from fluids of different composition. The polymetallic polyphase Au-Ag-Te mineralization and hydrothermal alteration indicate an epithermal, precious metal island-arc type of setting. [R.K.H.]
