Olivine nephelinite from Paoanui Point, northeastern Wairarapa

Summary:Olivine nephelinite forms blocks within sediments of the Wanstead Formation (Eocene) at Paoanui Point. The blocks may be part of a disrupted dike or sill, and differ petrographically and geochemically from the nearest exposed basaltic rocks at Hinemahanga Rocks and Red Island. Analyses of two samples for major and trace elements plot in the field of within-plate alkaline basalts. The Paoanui rocks are compared with various alkaline rocks in an eastern coastal belt from north Canterbury and Chatham Rise to the Wairarapa and Raukumara Peninsula. [W.A.W.]
