Summary:The discovery is reported of a pyritized tube worm within the hydrothermal mound area of the Ballynoe baryte deposit. The worm does not belong to any known Lower Carboniferous taxon, but is remarkably similar to the vent fossils recently reported from Phanerozoic VMS deposits. This discovery confirms the syngenetic nature of parts of the Silvermines orebodies, and implies that seafloor hydrothermal exhalation did occur. [R.A.H.]
