Summary:Fluid inclusion and isotope data from sulphide-bearing veins in Lower Palaeozoic rocks in Ireland indicate that a regional flow of mineralizing fluid occurred in the fractured basement rocks underlying the mineralized Carboniferous basins. Geochemical data show that this fluid was ultimately derived from sea-water that had circulated deep within the basin; this is attributed to density-driven convection in fault and fracture zones.
