Summary:Systematic studies of granite pegmatites from Setesdalen, S Norway, reveal a strong coherence between the genetic history of pegmatites and the concentration of structural impurities (Ti, Ca, Fe and Li). Detailed knowledge of a pegmatite field, when combined with quartz analysis from a few selected localities, may indicate specific areas where prospecting for high-purity quartz is feasible. [R.A.H.]
