Summary:In this area, the presence of vegetation reduces weathering and this is reflected in the chemistry of lake sediments. The black shale catchment area was exposed during the isolation of a small lake 9000 years ago: before the shoreline became colonized by vegetation, intense oxidation of sulphides led to a steady increase in lake water acidity and in trace metal abundances (Ni 0.1, Cu 0.03, Zn 0.5, Al 3.4 %). After vegetation had become established, the chemistry of the lake sediments converged with that of lakes underlain by granite. [R.A.H.]
