Summary:The geology of the Kuusamo schist area is reviewed briefly and new aspects of the lithology are discussed in the light of current investigations. Zircons from a felsic volcanic rock from Niskivaara with an age of 2800 ± 8 m.y. make an earlier stratigraphic scheme questionable. The concept of remnants of a late Archaean schist belt extending from Sodankylä to Puolanka is supported by field evidence and isotopic data. [R.A.H.]
