Summary:The Kaoko Belt has three segments: 1) an eastern zone of upright folded Damaran Neoproterozoic shelf carbonates; 2) a central zone of inverted Barrovian metamorphic rocks with east-vergent nappes and 3) a western zone of high-grade metamorphic rocks, intruded by granites, with strike-slip ductile shear zones and isograds indicative of extrusional tectonics in an orogen core. A protracted Pan-African orogeny of late Neoproterozoic to early Cambrian age was involved with clockwise P-T-t paths and a half-flower structure centred on the crustal-scale Purros mylonite zone. The metamorphic phase, T and P and timing (garnet Sm-Nd geochronology; 576 ± 15 m.y.) are deduced in some detail and chemical analyses of garnets, cordierites, biotites, muscovites, chlorites, plagioclases and staurolites are electronically tabulated.
