Summary:Major, trace, REE and Sr, Nd, Pb, Hf, Os and He isotopic, analyses of tholeiites, alkali basalts, picrites, tephritic basanites and trachybasalts (data listed) dated 55-52 m.y. old show that this inland alkalic activity was contemporaneous with the main tholeiitic plateau lavas and also post-dated them. The alkalic rocks show marked crustal contamination, plot below the 'Nd-Hf mantle array' and have trace elements similar to HIMU OIB. The uncontaminated magma has 206Pb/204Pb values > 19.2 and is more radiogenic than the plateau lavas and Icelandic basalts, having an enriched component which may be derived from recycled material (of uncertain origin) within the plume.
