Summary:In the Serre Mts of Calabria, exposed continental crust left by the Hercynian orogeny, comprises lower-intermediate and upper crustal units. Voluminous granitic rocks separate the lower-intermediate and upper units. Numerous mica ages for metamorphic and plutonic rocks are interpreted as showing continuous cooling or discrete Mesozoic events. New Rb-Sr biotite ages, and a re-appraisal of previous isotope data are used to better constrain the post-Hercynian evolution of the Serre continental crust. The widespread ages form clusters that fit a model that invokes magmatic, hydrothermal and tectonic events both preceding, and accompanying the opening and closing of Tethys. [J.F.]
