Listwaenite evolution in the ophiolite mélange of Iti Mountain (continental central Greece)

Summary:Metasomatized rocks found at Iti Mountain are silica-carbonate assemblages of quartz + calcite + magnetite + goethite + hematite ± talc ± ankerite and relict Cr-spinel. Textural evidence suggests that this metasomatic event occurred during the weathering of serpentinite (of harzburgitic origin) in the Iti ophiolite. This development resulted in depletion of Mg, Mn, HREE and Pd, and enrichment in Si, Ca, Ba, Zr, LREE, Ir and Pt. Two different fluids were involved, the first probably drained from the serpentinite at ∼ 500°C,and was mildly basic, very rich in CO2 and possibly low in f(O2), and the second highly oxidized, very acid and at < 250°C to account for the influx of SiO2, the mobility of PGE and inferred existence of Eu in a trivalent state.
