Summary:During evaluation of four different field-based PXRFinstruments for the determination of heavy-metal contents in contaminated soil, several different sample preparation methods were tested and the results compared with those obtained by ICP-AES and XRF. The soil moisture and particle size were found to be the two factors which most affected the results. [R.A.H.]
