Summary:A kimberlite dyke has been found near Kotakonda, approx 10 km SSE of the known kimberlite occurrences of the Maddur area; the presence of well rounded megacrysts of olivine and orthopyroxene make it resemble a conglomerate. Serpentine pseudomorphs and subordinate clinopyroxene are set in a matrix containing microphenocrysts of euhedral olivine, monticellite, perovskite, spinel, apatite, calcite, ilmenite, magnetite, chromite and pyrite; the intergranular space is occupied by phlogopite, serpentine and carbonates. Major element and REE analyses are reported and compared with those for kimberlites from Russian and Greenland as well as other Indian localities. The tectonic setting of the Indian kimberlites is discussed. [R.A.H.]
