Summary:Tightly adhering protective coatings were prepared on the surface of marbles by a fourfold alternating treatment with 0.1 M solutions of ammonium hydrogen oxalate and magnesium silicofluoride. This decreased the rate of dissolution in dil. acetic acid to 2-6% of that of untreated specimens. Such coatings are translucent but are unfortunately highly porous. [R.A.H.]
