Age, composition and origin of the paleo-oceanic gabbros of Deli Jovan Massif (NE Serbia)

Summary:A complex petrological, geochemical and geochronological investigation of five gabbros and one associated diabase dyke in the eastern part of the Deli Jovan Massif, east Serbia, has shown that the dates of the gabbros occupy a narrow late Silurian-early Devonian interval (Sm-Nd mineral isochron age of 406 ± 24 Ma, U-Pb isotope dilution isochron age of 399.7 ± 5.2 Ma, U-Pb SHRIMP zircon age 405.0 ± 2.6 Ma). Nd and Sr isotopic ratios indicate a strongly depleted mantle source. Two of the gabbros show a clear overprint of prograde regional metamorphism at upper greenschist facies (T ∼400-500°C) at an age of 261 ± 19 Ma (lower intercept of discordant zircons). It is concluded that the Balkan-Carpathian ophiolite represents a suture line between Thracian and Balkan terranes. A complex geological history is revealed.
