Depositional environments, organic maturity and petroleum potential of the Cretaceous coal-bearing Atane Formation at Qullissat, Nuussuaq Basin, West Greenland

Summary:The sedimentology, organic petrology and geochemistry of humic coals and coaly mudstones in the mid-Cretaceous Atane formation on Disko Island, western Greenland, are described. The Atane formation consists of deltaic, fluvial and shallow-marine sediments; depositional cyclicity is interpreted to reflect delta progradation and episodic marine inundation. Three sections through the formation, 57 m thick at outcrop, were measured. Coal samples were analysed and, together with vitrinite reflectance and other regional data, were used to construct a coalification curve which indicates maximum burial of the coals to around 1600 m, followed by exhumation of a similar magnitude. In spite of this burial, the coals are immature at outcrop but have slight oil potential; they may, however, be sufficiently mature to generate and expel liquid hydrocarbons where deeply buried offshore.
