Summary:Mine dumps in this area show a strong enrichment in Ca, Sr, Ba and S. The mine dumps are crossed by streams which incorporate 15-20% of the mine spoil to stream sediment. Analyses of stream water show increases in SO 2- 4 and Ca2+, denoting gypsum and calcite dissolution. Ba is present as relatively insoluble baryte and is no hazard; Sr is regarded as having a therapeutic role in the treatment of bone disease. [R.A.H.]
