Summary:In the Dolomites a widespread thermal metamorphism took place at the contact between Anisian-Ladinian sedimentary rocks and monzonitic rocks of the Middle Triassic magmatic complex. 16 vesuvianites from the skarns of the study area have been analysed. They are poorer in SiO2 and CaO, and richer in Al2O3, MgO and sometimes H2O than those reported in the literature. The chemical and physical characteristics of the samples are discussed and it appears that their compositions and physical properties depend on a complex and changing environment. [R.E.S.]
