Laser sampling in isotope studies on uranium minerals

|Summary:||Obtaining correct results in dating uranium minerals is largely determined by the purity of the analysed sample, which is related to the heterogeneity of U minerals themselves and their tendency to contain lead-bearing sulphides. The purest samples are obtained with the 'local' method, where they are extracted from U minerals by optically controlled drilling. However, the method is quite laborious and involves difficulties in isolating phases of size <0.3 mm. Also, in mechanical sampling, the drill may wear and material may enter the sample from it, which is a potential source of errors. Here a method is described that substantially extends the possibility of local isotope analysis of U minerals. A focused laser beam is used. The sampling area is determined by the size of the U mineral segregation or of the individual phases and can be adjusted by means of ordinary optical devices from 0.01-0.02 up to 0.3-0.4 mm. The entire sampling procedure for a single point takes a few minutes and maximally eliminates impurities. (Author's abstract) [A.W.H.]|
