Summary:Quaternary travertines from Abruzzi, central Italy, of presumed interglacial age gave (range of 12 samples): delta 18O +21.58 to +22.73 (SMOW), delta 13C +2.71 to +8.40 (PDB); Sr 655-1115 (ppm); SO4 0.50-0.75 (wt.%). The stratigraphically- lower recrystallized samples have higher Sr, SO4, and delta 13C and lower delta 18O than the upper porous ones. Travertines precipitated from meteoric waters circulated through sulphate-rich levels of the carbonate Abruzzi sediments, at near ambient T and under two different CO2 regimes. [A.M.]
