Summary:A synthetic reference sampling target (RST) has been set up at Silwood Park, near Ascot, UK, based on a circular hot spot prepared by spiking a defined volume of top soil with BaSO4 in a previously 'clean' site. The temporal stability and heterogeneity of the RST have been tested and found to be acceptable for the intended use. Inter-organisational sampling trials are envisaged. [R.A.H.]
