Summary:Samples of rain and snow and of primary energy sources were analysed for Se by a fluorimetric method. Emission data for some energy sources and nonferrous metal production were taken from the literature. The total annual anthropogenic emission of Se to the atmosphere in Finland was estimated to be 27.9 t in 1989, of which 72% was from nonferrous metal production, and 28% from primary energy consumption. The Se fallout from precipitation was 18.4 t, 65% from rain and 35% from snow, the Se concentration of rain being higher than that of lake and groundwater. The Se in precipitation was of terrestrial origin, including fossil fuel combustion. The amount of Se used in fertilizers in 1989 was 19.7 t. It seems that nonferrous metal mining, smelting and refining were the main sources of the anthropogenic emissions of Se to the atmosphere. The Se fallout from rain may be an input to surface and groundwaters. [R.E.S.]
